The Microcephaly Epidemic Research Group (MERG)
The Microcephaly Epidemic Research Group (MERG) is a research team composed of researchers from several institutions working to find the answers for the cases of microcephaly reported in Brazil, which has been considered a health emergency of international concern. The research team comprises specialists in epidemiology, infectious diseases and clinicians; reproductive healthcare practitioners, paediatricians, neurologists and biologists.

O Grupo de Pesquisa da Epidemia da Microcefalia (MERG) é uma equipe de pesquisadores de diversas instituições que está em busca de respostas para os casos de microcefalia registrados no Brasil, situação considerada emergência internacional de saúde pública. A rede de profissionais inclui especialistas em epidemiologia, doenças infecciosas e clínicos; investigadores na área da saúde reprodutiva, pediatras, neurologistas e biólogos.

The research group leverages collaboration with healthcare professionals working in close interaction with patients in ambulatory care facilities of reference and hospitals. The MERG is also working in tandem with representatives of the Secretary of Health of Pernambuco and the Brazilian Ministry of Health, besides having established partnerships and debates with other institutions worldwide.
O grupo trabalha em estreita colaboração com os profissionais de saúde que atendem pacientes em ambulatórios de referência e ambientes hospitalares. O MERG também tem trabalhando alinhado com representantes da Secretaria de Saúde de Pernambuco e do Ministério da Saúde do Brasil, além de ter selado parcerias e debates com instituições de todo o mundo.
The main objectives of the MERG team are the development of research, and the analyses of epidemiological data. Currently, MERG is working on a case-control study examining the relation between microcephaly and Zika virus. Additionally, there is an on-going cohort study to quantify the absolute risk of adverse effects on the conceptus from women that showed exanthema during gestation period, and to estimate the incidence of infection by Zika virus among these pregnant women.
Os principais objetivos da equipe são o desenvolvimento de pesquisas e a análise de dados epidemiológicos. Atualmente, o MERG está realizando um estudo de caso-controle para estabelecer a associação entre a microcefalia e o zika vírus. Também está em curso um estudo de coorte para medir o risco absoluto de desfechos adversos em conceptos de mulheres que apresentam exantema durante a gestação e estimar a incidência de infecção pelo virus Zika entre essas gestantes.

There is a cohort study in consideration by the ethics committee that aims at characterizing the clinical case, and to describe the general growth, as well as tooth and neurocognitive development of children diagnosed with microcephaly during their first two years of life. Moreover, there is an ongoing study on the neurological changes associated to Zika in adults.
Está em fase de apreciação pelo comitê de ética um estudo de coorte para caracterizar o quadro clínico e descrever o crescimento e desenvolvimento geral, odontológico e neurocognitivo nos primeiros dois anos de vida de crianças identificadas com microcefalia. E está em andamento um estudo as alterações neurológicas relacionadas ao zika em adultos.
